This Tamiya 1/48 Heinkel He162 Salamander plastic model recreates a compact late WWII jet fighter that pushed wartime aircraft design. The kit focuses on the He162's distinct layout and turbine propulsion, giving hobbyists a clear look at the engineering behind one of the earliest operational jet fighters.
The Heinkel He162, nicknamed the Volksjager or People fighter, was among the first operational jet fighters to enter service. Built in the closing months of the war, it used the BMW003 turbojet and represented a rapid effort to field jet technology. Though produced in small numbers, the He162 remains an interesting subject for scale builders and history fans.
The kit accurately models the He162 including the top-mounted BMW003 turbojet, which is detailed and can be presented separately on the supplied dolly. Builders can leave engine covers open to reveal the bay or install them closed. The clear canopy is moulded to be shown open or closed, and the ejector seat can be removed for close-up cockpit viewing.
At 205mm long with a 149mm wingspan, this 1/48 scale model offers a rewarding build without extreme complexity. The kit includes a pilot figure and four marking schemes to personalise the finished model. Assembly requires glue and basic modelling tools, making this suitable for experienced beginners and intermediate modellers.
