The Japanese battleship Yamato remains a standout example of wartime naval design and engineering. Launched in December 1941, the vessel showcased Japan's shipbuilding scale with a waterline length of 256 meters and a displacement near 70,000 tons. Armed with nine 46cm guns that could engage targets out to about 41 kilometers, and fitted with heavy armour and a bulbous bow to reduce wave resistance, Yamato played roles in actions such as Leyte Gulf and Midway.
The Tamiya 78030 kit reproduces Yamato at 1/350 scale with careful attention to proportion and surface detail. At 751.5mm long, the one-piece moulded hull forms a clean base for the superstructure, while engraved deck fittings and finely modelled masts and sonar housings add realism that appeals to collectors and experienced builders.
Armament is faithfully represented with triple 45-calibre 46cm turrets complete with waterproof covers, plus secondary 15.5cm and 12.7cm guns and numerous 25mm cannon mounts. The kit includes movable elements such as the stern crane and working rangefinders, and comes with four reconnaissance floatplanes to round out the display options.
