This Tamiya 1/48 Lockheed P-38J Lightning kit recreates the distinctive twin-boom fighter with careful attention to surface detail and authentic cockpit fittings. The P-38J variant is celebrated among scale builders for its unique silhouette and operational history.
The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was a major Allied fighter in World War II, with more than 10,000 examples produced. Praised for its speed and climb, the P-38J incorporated intercoolers and turbo superchargers that helped its engines reach around 1,600 horsepower. This kit gives model makers a chance to interpret that legacy in 1/48 scale.
At 1/48 scale this assembly measures approximately 240mm long with a 330mm wingspan, faithfully reflecting the P-38's twin-engine, twin-tail layout. The parts set includes realistic air duct details, a well-appointed cockpit, and options for either an open or closed canopy. Builders will find accurate structural and mechanical cues in the moulding to aid a convincing finish.
Beyond being a rewarding build, the finished P-38J makes a striking display model. The kit supplies three decal schemes, including the famous "Marge" flown by Richard Ira Bong, plus canopy masks and a full-colour painting guide to help achieve an accurate presentation.
