The North American P-51D Mustang is a landmark WWII fighter developed by North American Aviation under Edgar Schmued. Early Mustangs used the Allison V-1710, but the P-51D became famous after being fitted with the Packard V-1650-7 (a Rolls-Royce Merlin derivative), which boosted high-altitude performance. The P-51D carried six .50 caliber M2 Browning machine guns and proved decisive in escort and air superiority missions.
Beyond its combat record, the P-51D is prized for its clean lines and engineering. It flew extensively with the USAAF Eighth Air Force over Europe and saw action in theatres from North Africa to the Pacific. Tamiya's 1/72 scale kit reproduces that iconic silhouette and offers a satisfying project for builders focused on historical accuracy.
