Few names in RC spark as much nostalgia as Tamiya. The Thunder Shot first appeared in 1987 and the 2022 reissue brings that heritage back while adding updates that appeal to present-day hobbyists. This version keeps the classic profile while incorporating practical improvements derived from later models like the Fire Dragon and Thunder Dragon.
The 2022 update retains the Thunder Shot silhouette but adds meaningful performance parts. CVA oil dampers II replace the older Type I units to give smoother rebound and compression control. Combined with a fully independent double wishbone suspension on all four wheels and a front stabilizer, the chassis delivers better traction on rough ground. The aluminum motor mount improves heat dissipation and strengthens the motor mounting area for more consistent performance.
The body is moulded from durable polycarbonate, supplied pre-cut and pre-painted in white and blue, with a clear canopy for realistic looks. Hobbyists will fit the included stickers and driver figure during assembly. The ABS bathtub chassis forms a sturdy base and the sealed gearboxes contain die-cast 3-bevel differential gears for reliable torque transfer.
This kit ships with a Type 540 brushed motor and a HobbyWing THW 1060 Brushed Motor ESC rated for 2-3S packs. To complete the build you will need a 2-channel radio, steering servo, and a 7.2V battery plus compatible charger. Once fitted, the semi-pneumatic spike tyres provide strong bite for off-road use.
The Tamiya Thunder Shot 58706 blends nostalgic styling with practical modern upgrades. It suits collectors who value a classic build and drivers who want a dependable 1/10 off-road buggy to tune and race.
