Tamiya 35356 - 1/35 Archer: Close Study of the British 17-pounder Tank Destroyer

The Archer stands out as an unusual World War II British design, faithfully reproduced in this 1/35 kit by Tamiya. Built on the Valentine infantry tank chassis, the real vehicle mounted the 17-pounder gun facing rearward, with the crew compartment moved to the front. That reversal of layout is captured here, showing the unique engineering choices behind the vehicle.

Introduced into service in 1944, the Archer delivered significant anti-armor performance, able to penetrate roughly 192mm of armor at around 914 meters. The model reflects that tactical role while offering a satisfying assembly and painting project for modelers focused on authenticity and period detail.

This kit is best for someone with some modelling experience. Parts fit well, but the reverse-mounted gun and crew area need careful alignment and neat glue work.
Use enamel or acrylic paints matched to late-war British schemes. Mud washes and dry brushing bring out the hull lines and the gun mantlet effectively.
Yes. The Archer suits ambush or roadside scenarios. Its compact silhouette and open crew area lend themselves to small, focused scenes.
Layer pigments and washes for realistic grime. Pay attention to wheel hubs and the rear-facing gun area where road dust accumulates.
