The Italian P40 heavy tank is a distinctive chapter in World War II armour history. Built as Italy's only heavy tank series, the P40 combined a sturdy hull layout with bogey-style road wheels and a leaf spring suspension. The designation P40 comes from Pesante, meaning heavy, and 1940 as its adoption year. Its basic construction echoed earlier Carro Armato M13/40 components in several areas.
Equipped with a 75mm main gun and an 8mm Breda machine gun, the P40 relied on a 330hp V12 diesel engine for mobility. Designers introduced sloped armour after frontline encounters with Soviet T-34 tanks. Although around 1,200 were ordered, only a small number were finished before Italy signed the 1943 armistice. Completed units saw limited action in northern theatres and in Yugoslavia through the closing months of the war.
This 1/35 scale model kit from Italeri represents the P40 with clear riveted hull detail, sloped armour and faithful leaf spring suspension. The kit uses assembly type tracks and includes photo-etched items such as exhaust covers and fender stays to boost realism. Decals provide three marking choices, covering a Fiat Ansaldo prototype and captured German examples, which is useful for display or diorama work.
