Soft-rate tuning spring for R12/GT

The Yokomo R12-37SS is a soft-rate replacement spring designed for use with X-style shocks on R12 and GT series 1/10-scale RC chassis. It serves as a tuning component to reduce initial compression and adjust rebound characteristics, giving finer control over chassis balance without swapping shock pistons or oil weight.

Fitting the spring is simple for anyone used to basic shock servicing: remove the shock cap and spring retainer, withdraw the old spring, position the R12-37SS correctly on the shock shaft, then reassemble and verify preload. Use standard shock tools and a stable bench to keep small parts secure while you work.

On the circuit the soft spring is commonly used to:

  • Increase mechanical grip on lower-traction surfaces by allowing more initial compliance.
  • Smooth out small bumps and curbs to improve mid-corner stability.
  • Work alongside softer shock oil or reduced preload to fine-tune roll and turn-in response.

Opt for this spring when you want a more progressive feel and gentler weight transfer, especially after basic setup items like anti-roll bars and ride height have been set.

Remove the shock cap and spring retainer, slide out the existing coil, place the R12-37SS onto the shaft with the correct ends oriented, then reassemble and set preload. Work on a flat surface and keep small parts in a tray to avoid loss.
Not always. If the car feels too bouncy, using a slightly heavier oil can help control rebound while maintaining the softer spring's initial compliance. Test in small steps to find balance.
Yes. After installing the R12-37SS, verify ride height and spring preload to ensure the chassis geometry and handling remain as intended. Small adjustments may be needed.
