Bandai VF-31S Siegfried HG 1/100 technical overview

The Bandai 5072010 VF-31S Siegfried HG 1/100 is a high grade 1/100 scale plastic model kit that recreates the variable fighter from the Macross series, supplied as a deluxe set which includes option parts intended for the Arad Molders specification.

Layout and moulding

The kit captures the VF-31S profile with multiple color-moulded pieces for major exterior panels. Runners are arranged to retain surface detail on fuselage panels and armor sections. The deluxe label indicates additional Arad Molders option parts rather than a fundamental change to the kit's core engineering.

Build process and joint design

Construction follows standard HG snap-fit practice with parts designed to align without glue. Primary joints use multi-axis connectors so the leg and shoulder subassemblies permit transitions between fighter, GERWALK and Battroid configurations. Peg tolerances and friction at hips and ankles will determine pose retention and may need minor adjustment or light tensioning for long-term hold.

Finish prep and painting notes

Most components arrive colour-moulded, with panel lines left visible for washes or shading. Smaller details and cockpit elements typically benefit from paint to reach display standard. Surface texture matches current HG standards and takes light sanding and seam work where runners meet.

Stability when posed

The design balances articulation with display stability. In fighter mode the centre of gravity favors using a tail stand or base for elevated presentation. In Battroid stance the ankle and hip clearance provide a stable footprint, but extreme leaning or airborne positions may require support or tightened joint interfaces.

Specifications

  • Scale: 1/100
  • Grade: HG
  • Assembly: colour-moulded parts designed for snap-fit assembly
  • Finish: primary colour-moulded parts suitable for additional painting and panel shading

A straightforward 1/100 HG offering with extra parts to represent the Arad Molders variation; assembly emphasises part fit and joint friction for pose holding, and the completed model presents well across fighter, GERWALK and Battroid displays.

Use hobby acrylics or lacquer primers compatible with polystyrene. A light primer helps show panel lines for washes and improves adhesion on small cockpit parts.
No glue is required for the standard snap-fit build, but cyanoacrylate or plastic cement can be used for seam filling or custom modifications.
Light shimming with thin plastic or a small dab of clear nail polish on the peg can increase friction. Take care to avoid over-tightening which may stress parts.
The option parts are designed to supplement existing runners and swap into the standard build with little extra modification, though checking fit before final assembly is advised.
A basic snap-fit build can be completed in several afternoons; adding paint, panel lining and seam work will extend the project to multiple weekends depending on your detailing goals.
