The Trumpeter 05542 1/35 Russian 1K17 Szhatie model offers a close study of one of the Soviet Union's most unusual military developments. This self-propelled laser vehicle is shown on the MSTA-S chassis and features the turret-mounted laser projector array in faithful scale.
The 1K17 Szhatie was intended to blind or disrupt enemy optical and electro-optical systems using a concentrated laser beam. The real system relied on an arrangement of artificial rubies weighing around 30 kg, plus a generator and auxiliary battery to supply power, with movable metal caps protecting the lenses. A 12.7mm NSV machine gun was fitted for close defense against infantry and low aircraft threats.
This kit suits model builders who enjoy complex Cold War subjects. With more than 1060 parts including photo-etched details and individual track links, the assembly is rewarding and results in a striking display model. The multi-directional slide-molded hull and turret parts provide crisp surface detail for painting and finishing.
