The English Electric Lightning remains a standout British supersonic interceptor, famous for its climb rate and compact twin-engine layout used by the Royal Air Force. The Trumpeter 01634 kit reproduces the Lightning in 1:72 scale, giving modellers an opportunity to build a faithful miniature of this notable Cold War fighter.
Originally designed as a point-defence interceptor, the Lightning later took on strike and reconnaissance roles. The first production F.1 flew in October 1959, equipped with radar and Firestreak missiles. Later versions such as the F.1A and F.2 added features like air-to-air refuelling, upgraded avionics, and a steerable nosewheel to improve ground handling.
This Trumpeter kit contains 72 plastic parts with 4 clear pieces for canopy and missiles, and is moulded in light grey plastic. The assembled model measures 233.13mm long with a 148.06mm wingspan. The kit comes on 5 sprues and includes decals for the Lightning F.1A XM 181 in RAF markings from 1971, requiring careful fitting and painting for best results.
