Shenyang J-8II Finback-B: Background and Modelling Notes

The Shenyang J-8II Finback-B represents a key redesign in Chinese fighter development, featuring a reprofiled forward fuselage with lateral inlets and a solid nose to house an enlarged fire-control radar. First flown on June 12, 1984, it was publicly revealed in 1986 and reached operational status in 1992. For scale builders, the Trumpeter 1:72 kit provides a faithful way to recreate this aircraft with attention to historical detail.

Kit Features and Assembly Guidance

This Trumpeter release captures the J-8II profile at a compact 1:72 scale. The completed model measures 289.5 mm in length with a 129.9 mm wingspan and is made up of 118 plastic parts across 5 sprues. Optional position flaps and accurate decal artwork for the PLA Naval Air Force No.81192 give modellers chances to personalise finishes while tackling a moderate assembly effort.

Specifications

  • Scale: 1:72
  • Length: 289.5 mm
  • Wingspan: 129.9 mm
  • Total Plastic Parts: 118 pcs
  • Total Sprues: 5 pcs
  • Optional Position Flaps
This kit is best for modellers with some prior experience. The parts are well detailed but require careful trimming, seam cleanup and precise alignment to achieve a clean finish.
Acrylics or enamels both work; use fine brushes or an airbrush for thin, even coats. Choose colours that match PLA Naval Air Force schemes and finish with a clear coat before applying decals for best results.
Soak decals briefly and slide them onto a gloss surface. Use a decal setting solution and a soft brush to remove air pockets, then seal with a thin varnish to protect the markings for display.
