Tamiya 72008 Worm Gearbox HE Overview

The Tamiya 72008 4-Speed Worm Gearbox HE is a flexible part from the STEM lineup, built to support hands-on learning and small-scale mechanical projects. Hobbyists and instructors commonly use it when they need a compact gearbox for basic robotics and gear train experiments.

Mechanical design and operation

This unit provides four gear ratio options: 84:1, 216:1, 555.4:1, and 1428.2:1, enabling users to trade speed for torque as required. Changing the attachment positions of the gears allows quick adjustments to the output ratio to suit different loads and tasks.

Motor fitment and usage notes

The gearbox comes supplied with a Type 260 motor, a common choice for educational kits and light hobby use. An adapter is included so the gearbox can accept separately available 130 and 140 motors, and it integrates cleanly with other Tamiya Education Construction components.

Size and installation details

Its compact footprint measures 31.5mm wide, 47mm tall, and 49mm long, which makes it straightforward to mount in cramped chassis or experimental rigs used in workshops and lessons.

It works well for basic robotics, gear train demonstrations, motor control lessons and small drive train prototypes where different speed and torque settings are useful.
Ratios are altered by relocating the gear attachments to different positions on the worm and output shafts, following the assembly guide to ensure correct mesh and alignment.
Keep gears clean, check mesh clearance during assembly, and use light gear grease if acceptable for your project to reduce wear and noise.
