Overview of the Tamiya 71107 Mechanical Insect R/C Kit

The Tamiya 71107 Mechanical Insect R/C Kit provides a practical introduction to basic robotics and radio control. Made for hobbyists getting started with mechanics and electronics, the kit balances an approachable assembly with visible mechanical action for learning and play.

Drive Layout and Movement Behavior

This build uses a twin gearbox arrangement so each side of legs is driven separately. The preassembled gearboxes cut down on tricky assembly steps. Running both gearboxes together moves the insect in a straight line, while driving them against each other makes it turn, showcasing simple mechanical steering concepts.

Radio Control and Handling

The two-stick transmitter lets users steer each gearbox independently, giving fine control over forward, reverse and turning manoeuvres. Practising with the controller helps newcomers understand differential drive and joystick coordination in RC vehicles.

Play Modes and STEM Benefits

Alongside mechanical learning, the kit comes with parts for a casual soccer-style game where the insect can push a small ball. Stickers for numbering add a custom touch and encourage creative play, teamwork and basic strategy during matches.

Specifications

  • Total length: 116mm
  • Total weight: 135g (excluding batteries)
  • Body material: ABS resin
  • Includes gearbox, motor, and remote control
  • Screwdriver for assembly included
  • Requires two R6/AA/UM3 batteries (sold separately)
  • Continuous running time with alkaline battery: 2 hours
Typical build time is around one to two hours depending on experience. The preassembled gearboxes shorten the process, so younger builders with supervision can complete it in a single session.
Use two fresh alkaline R6/AA/UM3 cells for reliable run time. Rechargeable NiMH AAs are also suitable but expect a shorter continuous run time compared with fresh alkalines.
The model is best on flat, dry surfaces. Light outdoor use on smooth concrete or decking is fine, but avoid damp, loose gravel or wet grass to protect the gearbox and motor.
