Hood and E Class Destroyers: A Concise Historical Snapshot
The Tamiya 31806 kit recreates two notable Royal Navy vessels from World War II: the battle cruiser Hood and the E Class destroyers. Hood entered service in May 1920 and stood out as one of the largest warships of its era with a displacement of 48,360 tons, serving as a flagship for many years.
On May 23, 1941, Hood sailed with the battleship Prince of Wales and several destroyers in an operation to intercept the German ships Bismarck and Prinz Eugen. During that engagement Hood was hit by fire from Bismarck, suffering a catastrophic explosion and the loss of 1,416 crew.
The two E Class destroyers included in the set, Echo and Electra, were completed in 1934. Each displaces about 1,350 tons and can reach up to 36 knots, and these destroyers carried out convoy protection in Arctic and Mediterranean waters as well as operations in the Pacific.
Kit Details and Construction Notes
This Tamiya 1/700 scale assembly captures the ships with careful detail. The assembled Hood measures 375mm long while an E Class model measures 143mm, giving a clear sense of relative scale. The kit reproduces deck structures, bridge layouts and hull features with precision.
Model builders will find practical features like moveable main guns and torpedo launchers using polycaps. The E Class hull is engineered in left and right halves to simplify assembly, and marking options are supplied for all nine E Class ships to improve historical accuracy on display.
