The Hawk Mk.66 is a key variant of the renowned Hawk family, entering service in 1974 as a training and light combat platform. Developed for the RAF, the type is powered by the Adour 151 turbofan and has a maximum takeoff weight of 2,360kg. Its roughly 11 meter fuselage and ability to carry up to 3 tons of stores, including AIM-9L Sidewinder missiles and a 30mm gun pod, give it notable agility in flight.
The Swiss Air Force selected the Hawk Mk.66 as an advanced trainer with boosted engine output. From 1990 to 2002 Switzerland operated 20 machines, using them for both air-to-air and air-to-ground roles thanks to their dependable handling and responsiveness.
Tamiya's 1/48 scale model provides a rewarding build for plastic modellers. The finished model measures 242mm long and 197mm high and reproduces the compact lines of the real aircraft. Photo-etched items for instrument panels and mirrors increase cockpit realism, while accessories such as the gun pod, drop tank and Sidewinder missiles allow accurate loadouts.
