Flat Clear Finish for Scale Modelling

Tamiya's XF-86 Flat Clear (model 81786) is supplied in a 10ml bottle and provides a controlled low-sheen varnish for scale kits and miniatures. Made from water-soluble acrylic resins, it adheres well to styrol resins, polystyrene, wood and common modelling plastics. The formula works for careful brushwork and for use through an airbrush when thinned correctly.

Is this suitable for polycarbonate RC bodies?

No. The XF series is not intended for polycarbonate shells. For polycarbonate RC bodies use paints specifically formulated for PC, such as the PS series.

How should I thin Tamiya XF-86 for airbrushing?

Thin with clean water for light thinning or use Tamiya acrylic thinner for a finer spray. Test ratios on scrap to match your airbrush and nozzle size.

Will XF-86 affect decals or transfers?

Applied in thin coats, XF-86 can seal decals without visible shine. Allow decals to cure before applying the flat clear and avoid heavy brushing to prevent lifting.
