Mogami in 1/350 Scale - A Detailed Naval Replica

The Tamiya 1/350 Japanese Heavy Cruiser Mogami kit recreates one of Japan's notable WWII cruisers with careful attention to hull form and superstructure. Built originally at the Kure Naval Arsenal, the Mogami was part of the 1931 First Fleet Replenish Program and carried 15.5cm gun turrets plus torpedo launchers at an 8,500-ton displacement.

After treaty limits changed, Mogami was refitted with 20.3cm turrets, which increased top-weight and affected stability. The ship saw action during operations such as the invasion of Java, raids in the Indian Ocean, and the Battle of Midway before its eventual loss. This kit aims to capture those historical details for experienced builders.

Assembly and Detail Focus

Targeted at dedicated hobbyists, the Tamiya Mogami kit requires careful assembly and attention to small components. At 1/350 scale the finished model measures 573mm long and 76mm wide, and the finely molded parts replicate the vessel's complex profile for accurate rigging and armament placement.

Specifications

  • Scale: 1/350
  • Length: 573mm
  • Width: 76mm
The kit is aimed at experienced modelers; expect many small parts and detailed subassemblies that need steady hands and patience.
While the kit is highly detailed out of the box, some builders choose photo-etch brass or fine rigging thread to enhance railings and antennae.
Use historically matched acrylic or enamel paints; study wartime photos to match deck tones and hull camouflage for a period-correct result.
