Precision Balsa Strips for Scale Work

Tamiya 70187 balsa wood strips are a staple for hobbyists and model builders who need consistent, easy-to-work timber. At 1.7x75x305mm these strips suit delicate assemblies and fine detail work, and their low weight helps keep models light while allowing accurate shaping and trimming.

Featherweight and Simple to Shape

Balsa is prized for being both light and flexible, with commercial supply commonly traced back to Ecuador. Its forgiving grain cuts and sands cleanly, making these strips ideal for scratchbuilding, repairs and custom detailing. Cut with a fresh craft blade for the neatest edges, whether you are a casual builder or a seasoned modeller.

Workshop Tips and Best Practices

  • Drawing and Cutting: Mark designs lightly with a pencil to avoid gouging. Use a sharp craft knife and several light passes for the cleanest cuts rather than forcing a single heavy stroke.
  • Smoothing and Finishing: Use Tamiya Finishing Abrasives (P180-P320) to level surfaces and edges before paint. Proper sanding creates a uniform bond and finish.
  • Gluing and Reinforcement: Wood glue or a good craft bond gives strong joints. Reinforce stress points with filler or small gussets when building three dimensional parts.
  • Painting Options: These strips take Tamiya acrylics, enamels and spray finishes, plus conventional artist paints, so you can match colour and texture to the rest of your model.
Balsa will absorb moisture so seal with a proper exterior lacquer or epoxy if the finished model will be outdoors. A good waterproof topcoat prevents warping and surface degradation.
PVA wood glue or a dedicated craft bond gives reliable strength and open time for alignment. For smaller joints CA can be used, but clamp carefully to avoid crushing the wood.
Score first with a sharp blade and follow with light passes. Use a steel rule as a guide for straight cuts and replace blades often to avoid tearing the grain.
