First appearing in June 1941, the P-38 combined a central cockpit nacelle with twin engine booms to deliver long range and heavy firepower. The F variant, made from April 1942, could take 150 gallon drop tanks on pylons for extended range, while the later G versions used stronger powerplants and could carry 300 gallon tanks.
