The Nakajima Gekko Type 11, known to Allied forces as "Irving", holds a distinct place in WWII aviation as a dedicated night fighter. First developed to escort long-range bombers, the twin-engine Gekko used oblique-firing guns to engage enemy bombers from an offset position. This 1/48 scale kit from Tamiya captures that specialist role and offers a satisfying build for modellers focused on historical accuracy.
Designed for nocturnal interception, the Gekko's angled armament allowed attacks without a head-on pass. The kit reflects these design choices and provides the modeller with an option to show the gun inspection hatch either open or closed, enhancing display authenticity.
Tamiya maintains precise engineering in this kit, which includes decal sheets for two individual aircraft and two pilot figures. The parts fit and detailing make assembly rewarding, and the completed model makes a neat display piece that honours the original aircrafts engineering solutions.
