The Douglas A-1J Skyraider, known under nicknames like Dauntless II, AD, A-1 Able Dog and Spad, has a long service history spanning nearly 30 years. Its development began in June 1944 and although it arrived too late for World War II, the Skyraider first saw combat in the Korean War in 1950. More than 3,200 examples were produced across several variants, with the AD-6 being the most common.
The final production variant, the AD-7 later re-designated A-1J, included reinforced wing spars and the strongest landing gear in the family. Powered by the Wright R-3350-26WB engine, it could reach about 285 knots. The A-1J served prominently during the Vietnam conflict with units such as the 14th and 56th Special Operations Wings, performing strike missions with bombs, cannons and rockets.
The Tamiya 1/48 scale kit recreates the Douglas Skyraider A-1J with careful attention to form and panel detail. Builders who value authentic shaping and precise fit will appreciate the parts layout and the modelling challenge. Assembly requires glue and paint and rewards patient work with a convincing display model.
