The Vought F4U-1D Corsair represents a major leap in WWII fighter design. Powered by the Pratt & Whitney 2,000HP radial engine, the type is instantly recognisable for its inverted gull-wing layout and high performance. The F4U-1D introduced a frameless canopy for better pilot sightlines and increased payload capacity, making it a versatile carrier fighter late in the conflict.
Entering service in 1944, the F4U-1D was the first Corsair variant to operate from carriers and it played a significant role in naval operations against Japan. More than 3,700 airframes were produced, cementing the aircrafts reputation for reliability and combat effectiveness.
Tamiya's 1/48 rendition captures the gull-wing geometry and external fittings with careful moulding. The kit includes parts to show bomb pylons and rocket mounts, providing authentic loadout options. This assembly offers a satisfying challenge for intermediate and advanced modellers expanding a WWII aircraft collection.
