Skyray Delta-Wing Interceptor, Douglas F4D-1

The Douglas F4D-1 Skyray is notable as the U.S. Navy's sole operational delta-wing interceptor. Originating from late 1940s aerodynamic research, its design work began in 1947 and the first prototype flew in January 1951, showcasing its 50-degree sweptback wing geometry and notable speed performance.

The production Skyray flew in June 1954 and entered squadron service by April 1956. While it did not see combat, it was active during the Taiwan tensions of the late 1950s. The Tamiya 61055 1/48 kit captures the aircraft's distinct lines and offers a detailed project for model builders and collectors.

  • Scale: 1/48
  • Material: Plastic
  • Assembly Type: Requires assembly
  • Paint and Decals: Not included
This 1/48 kit is best for hobbyists with some model-building experience due to fine detail and parts fit; beginners can complete it but should allow time for careful assembly.
Period-correct Navy finishes are often natural metal with specific squadron markings; consult scale paint charts for 1950s Navy aircraft and select enamel or acrylic hobby paints compatible with plastic models.
Decals are not included in this kit, so plan to source aftermarket or paint markings by hand if you want squadron-specific insignia.
