The Douglas F4D-1 Skyray is notable as the U.S. Navy's sole operational delta-wing interceptor. Originating from late 1940s aerodynamic research, its design work began in 1947 and the first prototype flew in January 1951, showcasing its 50-degree sweptback wing geometry and notable speed performance.
The production Skyray flew in June 1954 and entered squadron service by April 1956. While it did not see combat, it was active during the Taiwan tensions of the late 1950s. The Tamiya 61055 1/48 kit captures the aircraft's distinct lines and offers a detailed project for model builders and collectors.
