The Kawanishi N1K1-J Shiden began life as a conversion of the N1K1 "Kyofu" floatplane into a land fighter, developed privately by Kawanishi Aircraft and later adopted by the Imperial Japanese Navy. Its first flight in December 1942 led to a fighter known for inventive engineering and notable wartime performance.
Powered by the Nakajima Homare engine, the N1K1-J combined strong maneuverability with high power output. The large-diameter propeller required special landing gear solutions, including telescopic legs to clear the midwing layout. Production reached roughly 1,000 aircraft, and squadrons flew the type in theatres such as the Philippines, Formosa and Okinawa.
