The Mitsubishi J2M Raiden, nicknamed Jack by Allied forces, is represented here as a 1/48 scale plastic kit that captures the aircrafts role as a land-based interceptor in World War II. This Tamiya release recreates the Raiden's distinctive silhouette and design priorities, making it suitable for hobbyists who value historical accuracy and crisp molding.
The Raiden programme began in 1939 to tackle the need for a high speed, rapid-climbing interceptor to protect airfields and cities. Engine selection proved critical; designers settled on the air-cooled Kasei unit because it offered proven reliability even though its bulk created aerodynamic compromises.
To reduce drag and maintain climb rate, engineers extended the propeller shaft and refined the cowling into a slimmer profile, while adding a forced-cooling fan. The airframe used a spindle-like fuselage and incorporated Fowler flaps to enhance low-speed handling and combat maneuvering.
After remedying early vibration and visibility issues, the Raiden entered front line service with units such as the 302nd Air Group operating from Atsugi. The type performed well defending the home islands and achieved notable successes late in the war, despite mixed outcomes during earlier campaigns like the Battle of Mariana.
