Fine tuning with the Tamiya 54897 Ball Differential Set II

For hobbyists seeking to refine their Tamiya buggy's handling, the Tamiya 54897 Ball Differential Set II OP-1897 offers a practical upgrade over conventional bevel-gear differentials. This kit improves power delivery and wheel response, helping owners achieve more predictable traction on varied surfaces.

Model fit and included parts

This ball differential set fits several well known Tamiya buggy platforms, including the Buggy Champ (2009), Sand Scorcher (2010), and Fighting Buggy (2014). The package contains a 1150 ball bearing, eight 3mm differential balls, and both 4mm and 5mm screws, so you get the core parts needed for installation.

Adjust on the car for quick setup

A key benefit of this differential is the simple adjustment process. You can dial in preload and feel while the diff remains in the gearbox, which is convenient for trackside tweaks and quick test laps.

The set is designed for the models listed above. It may fit other Tamiya gearboxes with similar layouts, but you should compare part diagrams or chassis measurements before attempting to fit it to a different model.
Installation typically requires common hand tools such as small hex drivers, a screwdriver for the mounting screws, and a set of tweezers or fine pliers to seat the 3mm balls. No specialised tools are included in the kit.
Start with a light preload and test on your usual surface. Increase preload in small steps until you notice improved corner exit without excessive understeer. Keep notes so you can return to settings that suit your driving style.
