The Tamiya 1/35 German 38cm Assault Mortar Sturmtiger kit presents a faithful representation of one of World War II's most unusual assault vehicles. The model conveys the presence of the rare Sturmtiger, built on the Tiger I heavy tank chassis and armed with a large 38cm mortar intended to break through hardened defensive positions.

Origin and Battlefield Role

Work on the Sturmtiger began in August 1943 to address fortified targets. The short L/5.4 RW61 mortar, adapted from naval defense use, was mounted on the robust Tiger I chassis to cope with recoil forces reported up to 40 tons. To speed fielding, existing Tiger I hulls were converted rather than halting tank production. The vehicle carried heavy armour, with frontal plating around 150mm and side protection near 80mm.

Build Details and Kit Contents

This Tamiya assembly kit reproduces the Sturmtiger with finely moulded plastic parts in light brown and black. The set includes a crew figure, realistic track detail, interior and exterior components, plus an ammunition rack, 38cm rockets and a small loading crane.
