The JGSDF Type 74 marks an important step in Japan's post-war armoured development. Built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and adopted in 1974, the design includes the NATO-standard L7A1 105mm main gun and a capable fire control system. This kit reproduces the winter variant, emphasising the white and green camouflage used for snowy operations.
Following the earlier Type 61, the Japanese Ground Self Defense Force pushed for a more modern main battle tank, resulting in the Type 74. The winter conversion featured here reflects field adaptations for cold climates, with disruptive white and green patterning to blend into snow-covered terrain.
Tamiya's 1/35 rendition captures fine surface detail, including the characteristic cast-steel turret and the fire control elements such as the laser range finder. The kit also includes winter-specific accessories like crew skis, which add realism to dioramas and displays.
