The M1A2 Abrams represents a milestone in modern armoured design, evolving from the original M1 Abrams introduced around 1980. Its angular hulllines and large flat panels reflect a design optimised for battlefield survivability, driven by a powerful gas turbine powerplant.
One development in the series, the M1A1HA, fitted an L/44 120mm smoothbore cannon and upgraded protection with depleted uranium elements. The M1A2 built on that foundation by adding systems such as a CITV thermal imaging sight, a Position/Navigation System, and dedicated sighting for commander and driver. Its IVIS communications suite improved information sharing among units.
Seeing service from the early 1990s and used in the 2003 Iraq operations, the M1A2 is both historically significant and appealing for scale reproduction. The Tamiya 32592 1/48 kit captures these technical and historical traits for a compact but accurate build.
