Scale tribute to the USS Indianapolis

The USS Indianapolis was a prominent heavy cruiser of the U.S. Navy, commissioned in 1932 and active across key Pacific operations in World War II. This Tamiya 1/700 scale kit represents the ship as she appeared in July 1945, before her loss, giving modelers a historically anchored subject to build and display.

Operational role and historical notes

Serving as a flagship during major actions, the Indianapolis supported Task Force 58 under Admiral Spruance and later carried critical war material to Tinian. The kit captures those historical associations through accurate external detail that reflects the ship's wartime configuration.

Kit construction and detail level

The Tamiya kit delivers finely molded components that recreate deck equipment, armament and superstructure shapes. Included details cover anti-aircraft mounts, rotating gun turrets and realistic deck fittings such as anchor chains and anti-skid textures. The finished model measures roughly 266mm long and 29mm wide at 1/700 scale.

Specifications

  • Scale: 1/700
  • Length: 266mm
  • Width: 29mm
  • Material: Plastic
  • Includes two Curtiss SC-1 Seahawks
The kit reproduces external features and fittings typical of Indianapolis in July 1945, with scale-accurate hull lines and detailed superstructure parts suitable for a historically informed build.
Assembly requires standard plastic cement and painting is recommended to achieve the authentic look. Subtle shading and careful brush or airbrush work will bring out the kit's molded details.
