The USS Missouri is an Iowa class battleship renowned for its combination of speed and heavy armament. Commissioned in June 1944, Missouri was active in crucial Pacific operations and its deck became the site of Japan's formal surrender on September 2, 1945.
The Iowa class, which also includes BB-61 Iowa and BB-62 New Jersey, was built for high speed and heavy firepower, armed with 40.6cm main guns and capable of about 33 knots. Missouri later received modernisation in 1986 with updated weapons and electronics and served through conflicts including Korea and the Gulf, before decommissioning in 1993.
Tamiya's 1/700 scale kit reproduces the Missouri's slender hull and superstructure with fine detail. The model includes rotating main turrets and accurate secondary armament representation, plus small-calibre 40mm and 20mm gun mounts. Two floatplane types are supplied: Vought OS2U Kingfishers and Curtiss SC-1 Seahawks.
The preserved Battleship Missouri memorial offers a close look at the historic vessel. Tamiya based this kit on careful research to capture the ship's profile and fittings for scale modelling display.
