Explore the Tamiya 31460 1/700 Shimakaze scale ship model

The Shimakaze was one of the fastest destroyers of World War II, able to reach about 40.9 knots. Driven by steam turbines rated at 75,000 horsepower and fitted with distinctive quintuple torpedo launchers, she was intended as the lead of a 16 ship class but remained the single prototype. Shimakaze served actively until she was lost in the Battle of Ormoc Bay in November 1944.

Precision kit work inspired by historic naval design

This 1/700 scale kit from Tamiya recreates the Shimakaze with careful reference to historical sources. Originally released in 1972 and modernised in 2017, the tooling reflects updated detail and fit for accurate assembly.

Key Features of the Model Kit

  • Two-part hull construction captures the ship's slim profile.
  • Detailed deck components include anchor chain and surface features.
  • Slide-molded twin gun turrets are accurate, with poly caps enabling rotation of main guns and torpedo launchers.
  • Decals provided for linoleum deck panels and other hull markings.
  • Designed to be completed at the waterline for diorama use showing the Shimakaze underway.

The kit has small, detailed parts and benefits from some prior modelling experience. Beginners can build it successfully by taking time on subassemblies and using fine tweezers and magnification.
Standard polystyrene modelling cement is suitable for assembly. For paint, use acrylics or lacquers formulated for plastic models and thin in multiple light coats for even coverage.
Yes. The kit is designed to finish at the waterline and works well with realistic water effects and small harbour or open sea scenes.
