The Tamiya 31453 kit gives naval modellers a chance to assemble the Japanese Navy fleet submarines I-16 and I-58 in 1/700 waterline scale. These hulls represent submarines that served with Japan's expeditionary units during the Pearl Harbor operations.
Japan deployed a screen of around 20 submarines to support its surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, and larger fleet boats such as I-16 and I-58 were part of that force. Several of these carried Ko-hyoteki midget submarines intended for covert strikes inside the harbour, and none of those midgets returned to their mother ships.
The Tamiya 31453 assembly reproduces key features including the conning tower antenna, deck armament and the small Ko-hyoteki midget craft. The release includes new box art and a step-by-step painting guide, useful when exhibiting these models with other Waterline Series subjects tied to the Pearl Harbor fleet.
