The Japanese Navy Submarine I-400 was a remarkable feat of wartime naval design, built to carry and launch three Seiran aircraft from an onboard hangar. At about 122 meters long and displacing 6,560 tons submerged, it was the largest submarine of its era. Its range and endurance made it capable of extended missions without refuelling.
Finished in December 1944, the I-400 class arrived too late to see combat, yet its concept influenced later long-range submarine designs. Its role in naval history makes it a popular subject for scale modellers and maritime collectors.
This 1/350 scale kit from Tamiya recreates the I-400 with careful attention to the submarine's hangar and deck arrangements. Clear components let you display the Seiran aircraft stored inside the hanger tube for a layered diorama effect.
The set includes photo-etched parts for fine elements like handrails and the crane, plus four metal torpedoes and transparent canopies for the Seiran models. Forty-eight 1/350 figures are supplied to populate decks and scenes around the sub.
