The Tamiya 1/72 Kawasaki Ki-61-Id Hien model gives scale modellers a solid way to explore one of Japan's more distinctive World War II fighters. Accepted into service in 1943, the Hien stood out for its liquid-cooled Ha-40 powerplant, a feature uncommon among Japanese designs of that time.
This release depicts the Ki-61-Id, the most widely produced Hien variant at 1,360 examples. Its lengthened nose accommodated twin 20mm cannon armament, a key factor against heavy US B29 formations. Tamiya reproduces that character with a matte silver plating intended to resemble unfinished duralumin surfaces.
Hobbyists will notice careful shaping of the elongated nose and the narrow fuselage profile. The cockpit is arranged for straightforward assembly and can be partly completed before closing the fuselage halves. The kit also includes a detailed radiator and oil cooler, clear parts for lighting and gunsight, plus optional items such as a Venturi tube to increase realism.
