The Lotus Type 79, nicknamed the "Black Beauty", is a landmark in Formula 1 design from 1978. Its ground effect aerodynamics set a new standard for downforce and handling. Campaigned by Mario Andretti and Ronnie Peterson, the Type 79 helped Lotus secure both drivers and constructors honours that season while turning heads with its slim, aggressive lines.
The Tamiya 1/20 scale assembly kit lets builders recreate the Type 79 with careful attention to form and proportion. The finished model measures 220mm long and 108mm wide, capturing the car's low, race-ready profile. Removable front and rear cowlings provide access to display the cockpit, engine bay and suspension details.
The kit reproduces the unique side pontoon undersurface that was central to the car's aero package. Included parts such as metal air funnel covers and rubber tyres improve realism. Two decal sheets are supplied so you can finish the model as car No.5 or No.6, and alternative roll bar and air outlet parts let you model the British or German Grand Prix variants.
