Sleek futuristic styling and on-track agility

The Tamiya Ray Spear (VZ) brings a forward-looking body design to the Mini 4WD lineup, drawn by the same designer behind the Dual Ridge Jr. and DCR-01. Its silhouette emphasises speed and nimble handling, appealing to both competitive racers and scale collectors.

Body layout and visual details

The model uses clear green ABS for the body, with a removable canopy section so you can configure the car as open-top or closed-top. Dark silver spiral type 6-spoke wheels with black, small diameter super hard low-profile tyres give the Ray Spear an aggressive stance while keeping rolling resistance low.

VZ chassis build and durability

The VZ chassis is compact and lightweight, reinforced at stress points like the bumper and rear stay base to cope with racing demands. It accepts a number of aftermarket upgrades and uses low-friction POM 620 plastic bearings to improve drivetrain efficiency. The stock gear ratio is 3.5:1.

Tuning and upgrade pathways

This kit supports a broad selection of Grade-Up Parts sold separately for motor, tyre, and gear changes, letting racers tune the Ray Spear for sprinters, technical tracks, or high-speed layouts.

Assembly notes

The kit is supplied as a build-up model with colour-moulded parts to simplify assembly. A Type 130 motor is provided, and the car runs on two AA batteries, which are not included.

The Tamiya Ray Spear (VZ) mixes distinctive styling with a tough, upgrade-friendly chassis. Its balance of form and function makes it a solid pick for racers who like to tune and experiment.

For a straightforward performance boost, many racers move from the included Type 130 to a higher RPM Type 130 or a tuned can motor compatible with the VZ chassis. Check rules if you race under class limits.
Small diameter super hard low-profile tyres are fast on smooth tracks. If you run on dusty or rough lanes, try medium compound tyres or foam inserts to improve grip.
The VZ chassis is reinforced at common stress points like the bumper and rear stay base. With sensible setup and routine checks, it holds up well for club racing and practice sessions.
Basic modelling tools such as nippers, a small screwdriver, and fine sandpaper are enough for assembly. You might want polycarbonate-safe paint if you plan to colour the canopy.
