The Honda Monkey has been celebrated for its compact silhouette and playful styling since its first appearance in 1967. Built around a small 50cc air-cooled engine and a vivid red frame, the original design featured folding seats and handlebars so it could be stowed easily in a car boot. Over time, practical upgrades like better suspension and larger wheels helped keep the Monkey relevant to riders and fans.
To mark the 40th anniversary in December 2006, Honda released a special edition with red wheels, a black fuel tank and a checkered seat cover. Tamiya's 1/6 scale kit captures that commemorative look, giving hobbyists the chance to assemble a detailed miniature of this iconic leisure motorcycle.
This kit reproduces the 40th Anniversary Monkey with careful attention to authentic finishes. It includes vinyl stickers showing the checkered seat pattern and metal-plated parts for pieces like the muffler protector and handlebars, adding realistic shine where needed. Separately-molded emblems on the fuel tank and side covers enhance the finished appearance.
The suspension is modelled with working metal damper springs and the handlebars fold as on the original, reflecting the Monkey's practical design. The 50cc engine is recreated with fine detail, including vinyl tubing for realistic hoses, and the kit offers alternate muffler and damper components for customising the build.
