The IJN I-400 class represented an extraordinary naval engineering achievement during World War II, remaining the largest submarine until nuclear boats arrived in the 1960s. Designed to carry three Aichi M6A1 Seiran aircraft, the I-400 could ready and launch its planes within minutes. Plans for long range strikes, including a proposed Panama Canal operation, were never carried out, which makes the I-400 an intriguing subject for scale modelling.
This 1/700 scale kit from Hobby Boss provides a finely moulded interpretation of the submarine, with parts that reflect its complex deck and aircraft handling arrangements. It is well suited to modellers who focus on accuracy and detailed display pieces.
