The Hawk T1A played a key role replacing the Hawker Hunter within Tactical Weapons Units, with 89 airframes adapted to carry AIM-9L Sidewinder missiles and a centreline gun pod. This variant served in the Mixed Fighter Force alongside Phantom and Tornado interceptors, and was also adapted by the RAF display team where the gun pod was converted to hold oil for smoke effects.
