The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.VIII represents a key step in wartime development, arriving after the Mk.V with upgrades such as a larger rudder, the Merlin 60 series engine, and tail wheel retraction. These refinements improved handling and performance, and the Mk.VIII saw action from mid 1943 across Mediterranean and Pacific operations against opponents like the Luftwaffe and Japanese Zero.
This 1/32 scale kit from Tamiya recreates the Mk.VIII with close attention to surface detail and accurate panel lines. The parts include extended wingtips and finely moulded rivet patterns, and the kit lets builders present the aircraft landed or airborne using magnetic fittings for the gear. A supplied stand makes it easy to exhibit the model in flight pose.
The assembly reproduces the Mk.VIII armament layout, with two 20mm cannons and four 7.7mm machine guns represented. The Rolls Royce Merlin engine bay is modelled with removable cowlings to show oil tanks and the supercharger, and the control surfaces can be finished to show movement. Optional drop tanks are included for mission-specific builds.
